Breast MRI

Breast MRI uses a powerful magnet and a computer to create detailed images of the breast. Breast MRI does not replace a mammogram or breast ultrasound. It is used as a supplemental tool to diagnose abnormalities and diseases of the breast.

What to Expect During the Exam

You will be asked to remove all metal objects like jewelry, keys, watches, dentures, partial dental plates and hearing aids. After putting on a hospital gown, you will be taken into the MRI suite and asked to lie down flat on your stomach. Your breast will fit into a hollow depression in the scanner table. Earplugs are provided during the exam as the scanner makes a loud “knocking” noise.

The scanner table will slide into the scanner tunnel. You will be asked to remain completely still while the images are obtained. The MRI technologist will be just outside the room behind a large glass window at the scanner controls. There are speakers located inside the scanner allowing the MRI technologist to communicate with you at all times. The exam will take approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.
