Diversity at Aultman

Our Diversity Statement

Aultman will strive to:

  • Inform, educate, perform, model and lead its workforce to achieve diversity throughout the organization so that all employees feel respected and valued.
  • Create and sustain an environment that actively embraces diversity and recognizes the value and uniqueness of all individuals, so that Aultman may better meet the needs of its patients and customers.
  • Hold all individuals associated with Aultman accountable for actions and decisions impacting the achievement of Aultman Health Foundation’s Diversity Statement.
  • Utilize the successes in diversity to assist Aultman with becoming the health care provider and the employer of choice as we Lead Our Community to Improved Health.

Our Diversity Initiatives

Education - A number of seminars and symposiums are held at Aultman each year, covering a wide variety of topics related to diversity and inclusion. Some recent topics include cultural awareness, the LGBTQ community, integrating faith and culture in health, and autism awareness.

Employee VoiceThe Employees Voice Committee – Aultman’s employee resource group provides a forum for team member feedback. Launched in 2015, the group is diverse in age, gender, ethnicity and skill set. Committee members attend monthly meetings where they share suggestions, tackle projects to improve organizational processes and empower each other to create solutions to specific challenges.

Martii (My Accessible Real-time Trusted Interpreter) - To improve communication for the increasingly diverse population we serve, Aultman offers the My Accessible Real-time Trusted Interpreter (Martti) system. Martti provides video and audio interpreters for more than 200 languages and dialects. Mobile video-screen units can be brought into a patient’s room to connect to an interpreter in seconds. MARTTI’s video and audio services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Click here for a two-minute demo of how Martti works. Communication between Martti interpreters and Aultman is transmitted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant line to ensure patient privacy. All calls are documented, allowing Aultman to monitor call volume and track usage for regulatory compliance.

Diversity Scholarships
The Aultman Diversity and Inclusion Council awards a total of three scholarships to minority college students each year. Two scholarship recipients receive $2,500 each for Aultman College of Nursing and Health Sciences programs and a third scholarship is awarded to a minority student attending an accredited institution for an IT-related field of study. Lisa Johnson, RN, BSN, CDP, Director of Diversity & Inclusion and Employee Relations

Lisa Johnson is a registered nurse who serves as Aultman’s director of diversity & inclusion and employee relations. Lisa works diligently to bring and keep diversity and inclusion at the forefront of discussions, recognizing the importance of protecting individuals, and the entire organization, from unsafe conversations, practices and treatment. She recently obtained certified diversity professional certification through the National Diversity Council. This certification signifies her ability to provide education and training across the vast areas related to diversity and inclusion, cultural competency, unconscious bias and more. Lisa is an active advisory board member of the Cleveland Ohio Diversity Council and serves/participates on a number of local boards.

“Diversity has been with us since the beginning of time. It’s a part of who and what we are, we are diverse in age, culture, race, religion, sex and gender; we engage in diverse dialogues, have creative thoughts and ideas. Diversity will be here as long as humans exist. I challenge individuals to walk in the shoes of others, accept, acknowledge and educate themselves, as well as those they interact with, on the concept of diversity and inclusion, it indeed is here to stay.”

To contact Lisa, please email lisa.johnson@aultman.com or call 330-363-2032.
