Why Does Your Child Need a Sports Physical?
Before joining any sport, there’s an essential step every young athlete should take – the sports physical. According to Carl Fry, D.O., of Aultman Orrville Carrollton Health Center, the exam plays a crucial role in protecting student-athletes.
“Sports physicals are an important part of keeping your child safe and healthy as they prepare for a new sports season,” Dr. Fry said. “These exams help healthcare providers identify any potential issues such as heart conditions, breathing problems or past injuries that could affect your child’s ability to participate safely.”
Sports physicals are recommended because they are designed to:
- Make sure your child is in good overall health.
- Check how their body is growing and developing.
- Assess their physical fitness for sports activities.
- Review any injuries your child has experienced.
- Identify any medical conditions – even ones that have been present since birth – that could increase the risk of injury or heart issues during exercise.
“During the visit, the provider will review your child’s medical history, check their overall physical condition and discuss ways to prevent injuries,” Dr. Fry said. “It’s a great chance to ask questions about your child’s health, fitness or development – especially if they’re starting a new sport or increasing their activity level.”
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all children have a physical before participating in sports. Ideally, the child’s physical should take place at least six weeks prior to starting practice.
“Most schools and athletic programs require a current sports physical before the season starts, so getting it done early helps avoid delays and gives you peace of mind,” Fry said.
Even kids who don’t play organized sports can benefit from an annual sports physical because all kids are potential athletes. If they decide to join a sport, they’ll already have their medical eligibility in hand.
The child’s regular healthcare provider is the best person to see for a sports physical because they know the child well.
For your child’s appointment, bring their completed, required physical form from their school or team, along with any additional information regarding allergies, immunizations, recent illnesses or injuries, contact lenses or dental appliances your child’s provider may not be aware of. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about medication or supplements your child is taking that the provider did not prescribe.
