Camping Activities Are Good for Your Mind and Body
June is National Camping Month – a time to explore the outdoors with family and friends. Whether you are looking to rough it in a tent or glamp in a motorhome, there are endless ways to enjoy time outside and reconnect with nature. Here are a few activities that can elevate the camping experience for the whole family.
Hiking – Hiking is one of the best ways to slow down and connect with nature. As you walk, try identifying different plants and animal species. It is also a great way to keep your body moving and help kids burn off energy.
Before heading out, apply insect repellent and sunscreen. Stay on marked trails and bring a trail map to avoid getting lost. Carry a small first aid kit in case of minor injuries.
Biking – Campgrounds provide a safe, accessible environment for biking for all ages. Riding a bike allows visitors to explore the area while getting a great workout and enjoying the scenery.
Some campgrounds offer both mountain biking and flat trail options to accommodate different skill levels. Riders should obey traffic laws and remain aware of their surroundings at all times. Children should always be accompanied by an adult.
Fishing – Grab your fishing poles and create lasting family memories while enjoying peaceful waterfront surroundings. If you plan to fish during your trip, purchase a fishing license in advance. When fishing with children, ensure they understand and follow safety rules.
Playing Cards – A fun rainy-day activity is playing cards and board games. Plan ahead and pack your favorites for entertainment for the whole family.
Nature Scavenger Hunts – A nature scavenger hunt gives children an interactive way to explore the outdoors. Create a list of plants, insects and/or animals to find near your campsite. Free printable versions are also available online you can print before your trip.
Campground Amenities – Take time to enjoy everything the campground has to offer. Some locations provide rentals for boats, paddleboards and kayaks, allowing you to enjoy the water without bringing your own equipment.
Other campgrounds feature amenities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, volleyball courts or miniature golf. Check the campground’s website before arriving to plan how to take advantage of available amenities.
Relax – Escape a busy schedule and embrace the slower pace of nature. Spend time sitting by a creek, watching birds or simply soaking up the sun. Stress has been shown to have a negative impact on health, so use your trip as an opportunity to relax and reset.
