Ten Small Changes to Find Your Calm

In honor of National Employee Wellness Month, we invite you to take a few minutes to learn how to find your calm. No matter what you do or where you work, your job can cause stress. It’s important to take time to manage stress and recharge.

Sleep is strongly connected to stress. When stress levels increase, your ability to get good rest decreases. In turn, lack of sleep makes everyday challenges at work and home feel even more difficult to manage.

Making small and consistent changes like the 10 listed below can help reduce stress and improve sleep, allowing you to feel more balanced.

  1. Protect your sleep routine. Go to bed and wake up at consistent times – even on weekends. Keeping a regular schedule helps regulate the natural sleep-wake cycle of your body.

  2. Create a wind-down ritual. Spend about 20 minutes before bed doing something calming. Try reading, gentle stretching or listening to relaxing music. This helps signal to your brain that it’s time to rest.

  3. Take mindful breaks during the day. Even a few minutes of deep breathing, meditation or stepping away from screens can reset your nervous system and lower stress levels.

  4. Move your body. Physical activity helps release built-up tension and supports deeper sleep. Try a short walk to boost your mood and energy.

  5. Stay connected. Talking with friends, family or co-workers can reduce feelings of isolation and ease mental strain.

  6. Set healthy boundaries. Protect your time and energy. It is OK to say no when necessary. This creates space for rest and recovery.

  7. Limit evening screen time. Reduce exposure to bright screens at least an hour before bed to help your brain naturally prepare for sleep.

  8. Practice gratitude. Write down a few things you’re thankful for each day. Gratitude can quiet racing thoughts and shift your mindset, especially right before bed.

  9. Fuel and hydrate wisely. Eating balanced meals and getting adequate hydration will support your mental clarity and help maintain your energy throughout the day, which can also improve sleep.

  10. Spend time outdoors. Natural light and fresh air during the day can reduce stress and help regulate your internal clock.

Remember: Taking care of yourself is not a luxury. It is essential for your overall wellness and health. Start slowly with some of these steps. Practice them consistently and gradually add more into your daily routine. You will feel calmer, more focused and better rested.
