Exam Preparation

  • Please shower or bathe before your exam using a non-deodorant soap.

  • Do not use deodorant, perfumes, lotion or powders because they can appear as artifacts on the breast images.

  • Please wear a two-piece outfit as you will be asked to undress from the waist up.

  • Please bring information about where and when you had your last mammogram. We will need to obtain the images for comparison to your current mammogram.

What to Expect During the Exam
You will be asked to undress from the waist up and wear a patient gown. During the exam, the technologist will position your breasts on the mammography equipment and firm pressure will be applied. Please inform your technologist if the pressure is painful or seems too firm, as it may need to be adjusted. Although this pressure may be unpleasant, it is needed to obtain quality images for the radiologist to view. The pressure will be released as soon as an image is acquired. This process will repeat several times until all necessary images are complete. The exam will take approximately 30 minutes.
