Student Nurse Internship Program

Aultman is proud to offer an internship opportunity for nursing students where precepting is part of their curriculum. The Aultman student nurse internship program is designed for nursing students planning to seek employment within the Aultman system (Aultman Hospital, Aultman Alliance Community Hospital, Aultman Orrville Hospital, Aultman Woodlawn and Aultman Deuble Heart & Vascular Hospital) after graduation. This internship program includes precepting, which involves one-on-one training and supervision with an RN, to meet the specific clinical requirements established by the college or university where the student is enrolled. Successful completion of this internship program guarantees a post-graduate nursing position within the Aultman Health System.

Why Join the Program

The student nurse internship program helps ease your transition from student to nurse by integrating into the work culture, fostering strong relationships and being part of our cohesive team while mastering nursing content. Additionally, student nurse interns will receive recruitment bonuses totaling up to $15,000:

  • $1,500 initially, within 30 days from the effective date.
  • $1,500 payment 60 days from the effective date.
  • $7,000 bonus once you pass the NCLEX and start as an RN, accepting a full-time or part-time position.
  • Eligible for up to $5,000 in student loan forgiveness.

How It Works

  • Onboard through completing preboarding requirements and attending new colleague orientation (NCO) and clinical support training, when applicable (new colleagues only).

What is the Aultman Student Nurse Internship Program?
This is an exciting opportunity for student nurses who are entering their final year and enrolling in a nursing course requiring precepting in a clinical setting OR have a unique partnership with Aultman through our Alternative Pathways Program. An internship is a unique work experience offered to gain relevant skills and experience in your area of study. Aultman values the concept “learning never ends.”

Beginning your career at Aultman as a student nurse intern offers the chance to learn from experienced nursing staff, develop lasting relationships and forge meaningful connections as you become immersed in the work culture while securing employment with the largest healthcare employer in the local area.

Will an intern get to choose their area of expertise?
Aultman will make every effort to give significant consideration to each student’s internship preferences. To help tailor the experience, students are asked to select their top three preferred areas from the list of participating units and locations found on this page. While many factors, such as unit availability and suitability, affect placement decisions, Aultman will provide shadowing opportunities that include meeting and interviewing with nursing managers and team members in the selected areas. Taking both student interactions and organizational priorities into account, placement will be made in one of the preferred areas that best aligns with both. Ultimately, students retain the final choice in accepting the placement offered to them.

What compensation is offered as a student nurse intern?
Because we recognize the value our student nurse interns bring to our nursing teams, this exceptional program offers an amazing recruitment bonus package. Once you become an RN, Aultman offers a competitive hourly wage for registered nurses who commit to continuing their careers within the Aultman Health System. Compensation details will be discussed directly with candidates by Aultman Human Resources.

How long is the work commitment after precepting is completed?
With successful completion of the internship program and upon passing the NCLEX, the student has a two-year obligation as an RN within Aultman Health System. Eligibility for transfer to a different unit within the Aultman Health System would be after six months of employment, provided the student is in good standing as a colleague.

Most new nurses gain the greatest benefits from the program and experience a smooth transition from student to nurse by staying in the same unit they interned in for a year before pursuing a transfer.

Do precepting hours count as clinical hours?
The student nurse internship hours will count as precepting hours as determined by the students’ program and curriculum.

How many precepting hours are required?
Precepting hours are determined by each nursing program to meet curriculum requirements. Aultman adheres to the college’s requirements and guidelines for precepting.

What does the application and onboarding process look like?

  • Application and interview process.
  • Accept offer.
  • Complete preboarding requirements for new colleagues.
  • Attend new colleague orientation (NCO) and clinical support training.
  • Begin precepting as a student nurse intern.
  • Once you become an RN, you will follow the same process as our new graduate nurses, including enrollment in Nurse Academy, participation in the Nurse Residency Program, and complete the full duration of precepting as an RN on your unit.

What role will a student nurse intern perform following preceptorship?
Following preceptorship, the intern will fill a patient care technician, nurse aide position, or an equivalent role should the student hold a higher degree/certification that is casual status (16 hours/month). Students who are already Aultman colleagues may choose to stay in their current role and/or status if it is a clinical bedside position. This will be evaluated and discussed during the interview process.

This helps the student stay connected to the unit and facilitates continued learning and growth. Once the intern has passed the NCLEX, he/she is offered the opportunity to transition to a part-time or full-time RN position on the unit of participation with sign-on work commitment.

Important note: If you are an Alternative Pathway student, some of this information may not apply to you. Since we tailor our program to align with your college curriculum for a unique experience, certain details may differ. For further details and questions, please contact Chris Gemma or Carolyn Harmon.

* Participation in the Student Nurse Internship - Alternative Pathway is contingent upon the student's nursing program actively partnering with Aultman to ensure alignment with clinical requirements and program objectives.
