April Is Celebrate Diversity Month
This month is recognized as Celebrate Diversity Month. The observance started 20 years ago, in 2004, as a way to recognize and honor the diversity of the world around us.
It serves as a reminder that we need to recognize and understand all of our differences, whether they are related to gender, race, ethnicity, faith, sexual orientation or other factors. By appreciating our similarities and differences, the month aims to get people to foster a deeper understanding of others, regardless of who they are, what they are or how they live.
Aultman’s director of diversity, Lori Stokes, shared her thoughts on this special month. Lori offers an acronym, using the word director, as a reminder of what diversity is all about:
Diversity
Is
Recognizing
Each other’s
Cultural differences
Together to
Optimize
Respect
“Celebrate Diversity Month is a great time to learn about not only our culture, but other cultures as well, to expand our knowledge,” Stokes said. “The stories and facts that you learn will fill you with wonder and gratitude.”
Plus, when we learn about different cultures, we can understand them further, which can help remove common misunderstandings. In addition to learning more about other cultures, we can also observe this month by simply being kind and listening.
The point of celebrating diversity is to be kind, respectful and appreciative of everyone, no matter where they come from. And intentionally listening to others – no matter who they are - is another way to do just that. If you have friends, colleagues or co-workers who feel like their concerns are not being heard, listen to what they have to say, and help them get their points across to those who might have trouble listening.
“With your new cultural knowledge, and a little extra kindness, you can learn to celebrate and salute the significant contributions and efforts of others, in our community and beyond,” Stokes said. “Remember we all are BETTER TOGETHER!”
