When to Seek Treatment for Allergies
This time of year, many people experience seasonal allergies. Allergies have many causes, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe. Here’s how to determine when to seek medical attention.
Allergic Reactions
An allergy is your body’s reaction to a substance that does not affect most people. Your immune system normally responds to things that can cause infections, such as bacteria or viruses. An allergic reaction occurs when your immune system mistakes a usually harmless substance for a dangerous one. Common triggers for allergies include:
- Food
- Insect stings
- Pet dander
- Mold spores
- Pollen
- Dust mites
- Medications
Allergy symptoms range from mild (sneezing, runny nose or itching) to severe (redness, swelling or difficulty breathing).
Treatment for allergies can include medication, allergy shots and staying clear of substances that cause a reaction.
Anaphylaxis: Severe Danger
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that can start suddenly and quickly become life-threatening. Common causes of anaphylaxis include medications, foods and stinging insects.
Though anaphylaxis usually begins within five to 30 minutes of exposure to an allergen, it can sometimes take more than an hour for symptoms to appear.
Because it can affect multiple organs, symptoms of anaphylaxis can include:
- Itching, rash or hives
- Redness or swelling of the throat or other areas of the body
- Trouble swallowing
- Tightness in the chest, coughing, wheezing or trouble breathing
- Vomiting, diarrhea or cramps
- Dizziness or fainting
If someone is experiencing these symptoms, they need immediate medical attention – call 911.
