In 2024, there were more than 6,000 motorcycle fatalities in the U.S., accounting for 16% of all traffic fatalities in the nation, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In fact, the NHTSA estimates that the fatality rate for motorcyclists was nearly 27 times the fatality rate for passenger car occupants that year.

Most of these tragedies could have been prevented. All motorists should be aware of other vehicles and take steps to share the road. And if you’re riding a motorcycle, you can take extra precautions. Here are a few reminders to help you stay safe.

Know Your Motorcycle

Read your motorcycle’s manual to become familiar with your bike’s unique features. Practice riding in a controlled area that is safe and free from normal traffic and hazards. This gives you an opportunity to learn how your motorcycle responds to braking and turning before you have to react to other motorists.

Whether novice or experienced, all riders can benefit from motorcycle rider courses. Ohio offers rider courses throughout the state. Once you feel comfortable, you can take your bike out on the road to test it in different conditions, such as wet weather. Practice builds confidence and develops the skills you need to respond to changing traffic situations out on the road.

Maintain Your Motorcycle

Just like a car, your motorcycle needs regular maintenance to keep running smoothly. Before you ride, you should check:

• Tire pressure
• Fluid levels
• Turn signals, brake lights and the headlight

Also look for any rust or damage to the motorcycle that could be a safety hazard.

For Your Passenger

If you ride with a passenger, their life is in your hands. Have an extra safety-approved helmet for your passenger. Make sure your tires and suspension are ready for the extra weight. Remind your passenger of these safety tips:

• Always keep your feet on the footrests, even at stops.
• Keep your legs away from the muffler.
• Sit right behind the driver, as far forward as possible.
• Hold on to the driver firmly by the belt or at the hips or waist.
• Only dismount once the driver says it is safe to do so.

On the Road

Wear protective clothing, including a helmet and eye protection. Jackets, pants and gloves made of sturdy material offer protection in case of an accident – and don’t forget boots!

If you can, wear bright colors or add reflective decals to your clothes for increased visibility.

Once on the road, assume other motorists don’t see you. Try to stay out of other motorists’ blind spots.

Scan the traffic constantly for changing conditions, and make sure you give other motorists enough room to react to traffic or road hazards.

Flash your brake lights as you slow down, and use your turn signals so other motorists understand your intentions.

Do not operate your motorcycle if you have consumed alcohol or any drugs that could impair your driving.
