Road Trip 2

Taking a Road Trip? Pack an Emergency Kit!

Before setting off on your summer adventure, make sure you're prepared for unexpected breakdowns, hazards or delays. A well-packed emergency kit can help you stay safe and comfortable until help arrives. Here are suggestions from Christina Benner, Aultman Emergency Department staff nurse, on what to pack.

Water. Pack plenty of water for both passengers and pets. This is one of the most important supplies you can pack in an emergency road kit. It’s especially crucial if you are stranded in hot weather.

Nonperishable snacks. Granola bars, crackers, chips, trail mix or beef jerky can provide you with nourishment and energy if you’re stranded for hours.

First-aid kit. Include basic items like bandages, gauze, tape, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers and fever-reducing medications (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) – especially if you have children.

Phone charger/power banks. Your cell phone is your lifeline during an emergency. A phone charger or power bank can keep your cell phone working even when your vehicle can’t provide power. Solar-powered banks are an option, too.

Flashlights. You may need light during nighttime breakdowns or times when you must inspect your vehicle in low-light conditions.

Sunscreen. You never know when you may need to be outside of your vehicle in the sun. Pack sunscreen to protect your skin.

Cooling and warming blankets. Available in a variety of sizes, blankets can be helpful if you’re stranded for hours. When it’s hot outside, you can drape the blankets over your car to keep it cool inside. Depending on where you are, nights can get chilly, so it’s always a good idea to pack a warm blanket as well.

Multi-tool devices. These can be useful in a variety of roadside situations.

Tire repair supplies. Always have a spare tire, jack and wrench. Tire sealant is also a good idea.

Jumper cables or jump starters. Jumper cables are a necessity, but a portable jump starter is even better if there are no other vehicles around when you’re unpleasantly surprised by a dead battery.

Road flares or reflective devices. These devices help alert other drivers of your situation, especially at night or during bad weather.

Cash. You may not think about carrying cash in today’s digital world, but it’s a good idea to keep cash on hand in case you’re stranded in an area with limited connectivity.

Fire extinguishers. Bring them along in case of a car fire.

No one wants to experience a roadside emergency, but it’s important to be prepared. Taking time before the trip to gather and pack these items is a smart investment in your safety and peace of mind.
