The Exam: What to Expect

We take great care to maintain our patients’ safety, and all exams are completely confidential. Treatment is patient-centered, ensuring we maintain the patient’s dignity and allowing them to regain control over the experience.

When you arrive for treatment related to violence:

  • You will be moved to a private room as soon as possible.
  • You will receive a medical assessment and treatment of any physical injuries by an Aultman provider.
  • Staff will speak with you about your options and Serenity program services.

A Serenity program nurse may perform any of the following services based on your needs and consent:

  • Medical forensic exam (including screening questions, physical assessment, safety planning and evidence collection) which may include collecting clothing, blood and urine.
  • Medications may be offered based on your needs and desire to receive them. The medications offered are for sexually transmitted infection prevention, pregnancy prevention and HIV preventive treatment. Your nurse will discuss these options in detail at the time of the exam.
  • Information will be provided regarding follow-up care and options. The Serenity nurse will also talk to you about the community social service providers that are available to you. They will also explain your rights as a victim of crime and provide assistance with the Victims of Crime Compensation Application.
