Grateful Patient Story: Dale Waters
Dale Waters of Sebring, Ohio, has been married to his wife, Amy, for 20 years. Together, they have a daughter, Calista.
In late 2024, Dale sensed that something wasn’t right. He wasn’t feeling well and was experiencing difficulty with bowel movements, as well as rectal bleeding. Amy repeatedly encouraged him to make an appointment with his primary care physician, but Dale postponed the visit.
Eventually, his symptoms – including rapid, unexplained weight loss and increased rectal bleeding – made it clear that the long drive to his family’s favorite vacation spot in North Carolina was no longer possible.
In May 2025, after finally undergoing a CAT scan, his physician told him, “This is not good.” The following day, a nurse practitioner from a local gastroenterology practice called and scheduled an urgent colonoscopy.
The procedure revealed a tumor in Dale’s colorectal area. “My heart just sank. I was overwhelmed and frightened,” he recalled. It was an incredibly difficult moment for his family.
Dale was referred to Dr. Marta Lavery of Aultman General Surgery, who was straightforward and kind. She quickly arranged surgery, and on June 16, Dale underwent the procedure, which included a permanent colostomy.
The tumor was diagnosed as Stage 3. To determine the most effective post operative treatment plan, additional testing was required, including a lung biopsy. Dale was grateful when all further testing showed no evidence of spread.
Dale’s treatment plan includes chemotherapy and radiation. Under the care of Dr. Heather Steele from Aultman Cancer Center, Dale has completed his radiation and four of six chemotherapy cycles.
Dale hopes others will learn from his experience: Listen to your body, follow medical advice and complete recommended screenings. He shared that he had been advised to complete a Cologuard® screening, but dismissed it because he had no family history of colorectal cancer. He now understands how important early detection is.
Throughout most of his postsurgery treatment, Dale has continued working. He encourages others to advocate for themselves with their employers and to understand their own limits. He also stresses the importance of talking openly with others and finding a safe place to share and vent. Opening up about his journey has helped him cope with the mental and emotional stress of his diagnosis, something he admits he needs to do even more.
Dale extends his gratitude to Brandy Hahn, cancer program clinical navigator; Dr. Lavery; Samantha Kibler, PA-C with Aultman Alliance Hematology and Oncology; and Dr. Steele. He describes the entire Aultman team as kind, caring and attentive listeners. Although his treatment is not yet complete, he is deeply thankful for the exceptional care he has received so far.
