Aultman Launches New Emergency Medicine Residency to Train Physicians for Emergency Care

CANTON, Ohio (June 21, 2021) – On July 1, Aultman Hospital will begin training new medical school graduates to specialize in emergency medicine in Canton’s first emergency medicine residency.

“This is an important addition to Aultman’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, and we look forward to helping to train the next generation of emergency physicians right here in Canton,” said Dr. Ali Southern, program director for the emergency medicine residency. “The new program will bring new, energetic doctors to the hospital to help care for patients in the emergency department. They will also help develop quality and safety projects and protocols, carry out emergency medicine research, teach medical students and non-emergency physicians and work with local emergency medical services.”

Dr. Southern will be joined by Dr. Will Clark, the emergency department chair, and many other faculty members for supervised patient care, lectures, procedural skills training, simulated patient encounters and emergency medicine research.

Six new emergency medicine residents will begin this July, with six more joining every July moving forward. In addition to emergency medical training, the three-year program will allow residents to rotate through other departments including intensive care, orthopedics, obstetrics, anesthesia and pediatrics to broaden their training. They will also partner with local fire departments to learn more about emergency medical services in the community.

Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Emergency Medicine, the new program will join other GME programs offered at Aultman including residencies in family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedic surgery and radiology, and fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology.
