Training Opportunities
Aultman's Family Medicine Residency Program is designed to train the family physician of the future through a diverse and well-coordinated educational program.
A Wide Variety of Family Medicine Opportunities
Whether your interest is women's health, sports medicine, geriatric medicine, emergency medicine or hospital medicine, Aultman's Family Medicine Residency Program offers a specialized training area for you. Resident training facilities include the My Community Health Center, local nursing homes and several private-practice-based settings.
Click the links below to learn about more training options.
Aultman Family Medicine Residency is committed to providing care for all members of the community. The faculty participates in the provision of care at various community sites. Residents select from the following or may arrange a different experience based on their personal interests.
- Hartville Migrant Clinic
- Stark County Health Department
Canton has a rich sports heritage, and we have the unique achievement of having several of our graduating residents accepted into sports medicine fellowships. Opportunities are available to work as team physicians as well as with certified sports medicine doctors.
Senior residents participate in geriatric training at Altercare nursing homes. Our residents work with the staff physicians for these facilities, which provide valuable clinical experiences in managing chronic disease in the elderly. In addition, residents may select a longitudinal experience in geriatrics.
Residents have an opportunity to rotate in our inpatient Hospice and Palliative Care unit, as well as hospital consults.
We believe the strength of residents’ education in family medicine lies in experiences in the ambulatory site. My Community Health Center, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) and Patient-Centered Medical Home, serves a growing patient panel of varied socioeconomic backgrounds. This assures your experience in managing a wide variety of medical and psychosocial problems. You will follow a panel of patients that will grow from 150 patients in your first year to 500 patients in your third year. My Community Health Center is physically connected to Aultman Hospital. This center comprises 18 well-equipped exam rooms, one procedure room, a phlebotomy room and an in-house pharmacy.
Your training will include OMT, co-counseling, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), dermatologic procedures, joint injection/aspiration, IUD insertion, Nexplanon insertion, colposcopy and other minor procedures.
Aultman enjoys a strong partnership with Akron Children's Hospital, which operates Aultman's Level 3 NICU, MFM services. The family medicine residents also rotate at Akron Children's main campus in their first and second years, doing one block of floors and one block of ER there. This enables them to experience a wide range of pediatric cases and establish relationships with some of the pediatricians and subspecialists in our wider community.
You will also be prepared for the practice of family medicine through our strong inpatient teaching services. Each of Aultman's residency programs complements the others and increases the clinical expertise we offer.
In the family medicine residency program, we never lose sight of the importance of our residents' professional and personal well-being. You will receive regular individualized feedback and be able to give your input during faculty advising sessions. The annual Resident Wellness Retreat, wellness elective and wellness conferences address issues such as taking care of your own physical, mental and emotional health. Residents can also focus on their well-being at monthly Balint groups. In addition, we provide the opportunity to tailor your curriculum to meet your professional goals.
The Aultman Family Medicine Residency Program offers opportunities for research including individual research projects and presentations at both NEOMED Scholarship Day and Aultman Scholarship Day. Residents are encouraged to submit their research to and present at local, state and national conferences, with additional educational support up to $4,000 for these presentations.
