Volunteer Spotlight: Linda Devine
Where do you live (city/area)?
I grew up in North Canton and graduated from Hoover High School. I remained in the North Canton area until I got married 12 years ago. My husband and I now live in Dover.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?
I retired in April 2016 as a registered nurse at Aultman Hospital and began volunteering in September 2016.
In what department do you volunteer?
I volunteer in the Breast Care Center every Wednesday. I also do various projects for other areas of the cancer program, as requested.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
Aultman Hospital has always been a part of my life. I was born at Aultman, graduated from Aultman School of Nursing in 1971, worked at Aultman for 39 years and now I volunteer here. I feel it’s important to give back.
I also like to be busy and social, and volunteering allows me to keep in touch with people who I consider family.
What do you like best about volunteering?
Since I am a retired nurse, I like to stay up to date on what is happening in health care. I also enjoy the socialization with people who have the same interests.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
I like to go to the movies and travel. I also volunteer at the Tuscarawas Clinic for the Working Uninsured in Dover.
Tell us about your loved ones.
When I was younger, I did a lot of traveling and I was career focused. I remained single until the age of 57 – when I met and married the love of my life. We have three nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews we enjoy spending time with.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.
I am bilingual – English and Spanish. Soon after beginning my career as a registered nurse, I studied Spanish in Costa Rica, then worked one year in Columbia, South America, and three and a half years in Nicaragua with mission groups. I have a special interest in Central and South America, and years ago, I visited at least six or seven countries there, along with Mexico.
