Volunteer Spotlight: Lori Pasch and Shelby
Aultman Alliance Community Hospital (AACH) volunteer Lori Pasch first discovered the benefits of pet therapy when she was a teacher. A school guidance counselor had brought in a goldendoodle to help students who had behavioral issues or were not completing their work.
Watching how students changed because of the dog’s soothing presence, Lori realized she would like to get involved in pet therapy. “After my husband Scott and I adopted our dog Shelby, we recognized that she would be an excellent therapy pet,” Lori said.
Shelby is a goldendoodle, a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle, an ideal breed for pet therapy. Poodles are intelligent and easy to train, while golden retrievers are calm and friendly. “Shelby loves everyone,” Lori said. “I don’t think she has ever met anyone that she didn’t immediately like.”
Lori and Shelby have taken many training classes to prepare them to provide pet therapy. The classes helped Shelby pass a rigorous obedience test for certification through Therapy Dogs International. Shelby also has learned to respond well to all patients, regardless of their age or health issues.
Lori and Shelby initially began volunteering in schools, a natural fit with Lori’s professional background. A lifetime resident of Alliance, Lori learned about the Paws and Reflect therapy program at AACH through Therapy Dogs International.
Paws and Reflect was established at AACH in 2002 to provide animal therapy for people who may benefit from interacting with animals, to ease feelings of loneliness experienced during hospitalization and to assist with reducing anxiety associated with a hospital stay.
At AACH, Lori and Shelby often greet patients as they come through the lobby on their way to tests and treatment. Staff members heading to the cafeteria often stop and say hello to Lori and Shelby, too. “Shelby and I love coming to AACH,” Lori said. “We have met so many wonderful people. I think I can safely say that many of the staff love a visit from her just as much as the patients do.”
Lori and Shelby also volunteer at Brookdale Nursing home, Regina Coeli and the University of Mount Union. When not volunteering, Shelby loves to play frisbee and explore Lori and Scott’s large yard. Lori enjoys traveling, reading and listening to music.
Lori appreciates the way Shelby brings a smile to everyone’s face. “Coming to AACH has become such an important part of our lives,” Lori said. “If we can make someone’s day a little brighter, that’s what fills our hearts with joy.”
If you are interested in getting involved in Paws and Reflect at AACH, contact Michele Quinn in Volunteer Services at 330-596-7821.
