Grateful Patient Story: Bob Cerana
Vertigo is debilitating and life-altering for anyone. For 91-year-old Bob Cerana, suffering from vertigo especially limits his ability to spend time outside and with family.
Bob’s vertigo started during a routine doctor’s appointment in 2024. He shifted to a sitting position on the exam table, and everything started to spin uncontrollably. Because of the sudden onset, Bob was seen in the emergency room and spent a day in the hospital undergoing tests, which ultimately showed everything was normal. While this was good news, Bob was still experiencing vertigo, without a known cause or an easy solution.
Bob’s daughter Lisa, a nurse, was determined to find the best care closer to home in Tuscarawas County. After Lisa explored local options with limited success, Bob’s therapist recommended that they reach out to Andy Beltz, therapy assistant manager for Aultman Therapy Services at Aultman Tusc in Canton. “Andy taught me everything I know,” Bob’s therapist told him.
When they walked in for the first treatment, Bob and Lisa could tell right away the space was created with patient comfort and safety as priorities. The treatment table was larger, wider and had more padding than the table at Bob’s previous therapy location. This provided a higher degree of safety during the quick side-to-side patient movement that is a hallmark of vestibular rehab.
In addition, Lisa said the models and posters of the inner ear made the mechanics behind treatment easier to understand.
Bob is still undergoing vestibular therapy with Andy as they continue to look for treatment to help eliminate vertigo for good. Hopeful, Bob said, “If this works out, I am going to buy Andy lunch at Olive Garden.” According to Lisa, this is the highest compliment Bob has given a healthcare worker in all of his 91 years.
The enhancements to the Vestibular Rehabilitation Program were made possible by the generous support of our donors. We are deeply grateful for our community of supporters whose contributions allow us to continue providing high-quality care. Your donations help fulfill our mission of "leading our community to improved health," ensuring that more individuals like Bob can benefit from essential treatments and improve their quality of life.
