Stay Safe While Cooling Down

It's been hot lately, and everyone wants to cool off. What’s the best way to beat the heat? Make a splash in the water! Whether you are boating or swimming at a pool or beach, check out these safety tips so everyone can enjoy themselves.

Boating Safety

Wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket that fits properly. Life jackets come in all sizes and are even fitted differently for men and women. Children should wear life vests at all times on any watercraft, including boats, canoes and kayaks.

Do not drink alcohol and operate a boat. In Ohio, if your blood alcohol content exceeds .08%, you will be arrested for boating under the influence (BUI). In addition, intoxicated passengers are more likely to lose their balance and fall.

Always tell someone your boating plan. Telling friends where are you leaving from, your route and an estimated return time will help people find you if you get lost or run out of gas.

Make sure you have a waterproof safety kit that includes Coast Guard-approved visual distress devices. Flares, lights and orange flags are all visual signals that you need help.

Pool Safety

Enclose your home pool with a fence or other barrier that is at least four feet tall. Make sure your kids have taken swimming lessons from qualified instructors, but remember: When panicked, kids can forget how to swim. Keep a close eye on non-swimmers using flotation devices, as they could slide off and drown. Keep the pool deck clear of toys and hoses so your guests don’t trip.

Swimming in the Wild

Whether you decide to cool off at a beautiful mountain lake or a sunny beach, remember to jump feet first in unfamiliar water. The water may be shallower than you think, or there may be rocks, and you do not want to risk hitting your head. Know your limits, and don’t swim too far away from the shore. If there is a sudden storm, get out of the water and head for shelter.

For more information about water safety, check out the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for great information about boating regulations in Ohio, as well as safety information. Their website has everything you need to plan a beautiful family getaway.
