Putting Fun Back Into Fitness

Remember the excitement of the ringing bell that announced the hour of recess or gym class? As children, we never thought twice about jumping rope, playing dodgeball or chasing friends in a game of tag. You never would have thought of those activities as exercise – just a chance to have fun with your classmates.

Now, as adults, exercise often seems like another chore. We find every excuse to keep from breaking a sweat or scheduling some exercise into our daily routine. We keep track of our steps, log miles and run to stay healthy – not because we think of it as fun. In fact, we watch TV, open our Kindle or listen to music while we work out so we can distract ourselves from the boredom of burning calories.

To keep your interest in staying fit, consider switching up your regimen. Think about activities that you find fun and include them in your weekly exercise routine. Try jumping rope, playing tennis, skating or ballroom dancing. All of these activities, when performed at a vigorous pace, can burn plenty of calories. Other more moderate activities, such as juggling, clogging or jumping on a trampoline, can get your heart rate pumping, too.

If you aren’t currently exercising, today is the day to start. According to the American Heart Association, even small amounts of exercise can reduce your risk of stroke and heart attack. The AHA guidelines recommend that healthy adults aged 18 to 65 should participate in moderately intense exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes, five days a week, or a vigorous activity for a minimum of 25 minutes, three days a week. In addition, adults should perform activities that benefit muscle strength and endurance at least two days per week.

Giving your fitness routine a boost from fun activities will help you get on the right track to a healthier you – and have fun doing it!
