Fishing Safety
Summer is almost here! For many people, this means boating and fishing. Whether you’ve been fishing for years or are new to this endeavor, here are reminders to help you get the most out of your day.
Review boating and fishing regulations. Regulations are meant to keep you safe and ensure a sustainable stock of fish. Each state has its own fishing regulations and licensing rules. You can find Ohio’s rules here.
Pack the right gear. Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when out on open water. Near the shore, children and people with poor swimming ability should wear life vests. Water reflects sunlight, increasing your exposure to damaging UV rays, so pack sunscreen and other sun protection such as hats and sunglasses. Bring a first aid kit in case of injuries from fishing hooks or lures.
Be aware of your surroundings. Before casting, check to make sure nobody is standing near you. If you are in a boat, go slow – hidden tree branches or rocks may create hazards beneath the water’s surface. And while it’s tempting to go barefoot, you should wear shoes to protect your feet from injury.
Keep an eye on the weather. Conditions can change quickly. If there is a threat of thunderstorms, take shelter as soon as possible.
Follow guidelines at public cleaning stations. Many parks and popular fishing spots offer public fish cleaning stations. If you use one of these conveniences, follow the park’s guidelines for disposing of fish scraps. Improper disposal can lead to damage from wildlife or dangerous encounters for park staff and visitors.
