2021 Class Inducted into the Aultman Hippocrates Honor Society
CANTON, Ohio (March 30, 2022) – Aultman recently honored four local physicians with induction into the Hippocrates Honor Society. This “lifetime achievement” award, created by the Aultman Hospital Medical Staff, recognizes physicians who exemplify the qualities of excellence, compassion, integrity and leadership. To learn more about the 2021 inductees and view videos from their patients, colleagues and family members, go to aultman.org/hippocrates.
Congratulations to the 2021 Hippocrates Honor Society inductees:
Ralph “Tip” Warburton, M.D., Internal Medicine
Dr. Warburton was born on Aug. 30, 1908. He attended North Canton High School, graduating in 1925. He continued his education at Hiram College and Case Western Reserve University Medical School, where he earned his medical degree in 1933. Upon returning to his hometown of North Canton in 1935, he opened his own practice with his wife, Esther – a nurse – by his side. In the 1940s, he dreamed of opening a non-profit medical center, which he later achieved.
In 1945, as World War II was occurring across the world, Dr. Warburton enlisted into the U.S. Navy as a physician. Dr. Warburton started practicing at Aultman Hospital and served as president of the medical staff in 1952.
In 1969, at the age of 65, Dr. Warburton began to put his dreams into action to open a free-standing medical clinic that would support the community with health education, disease prevention programs and high-quality, affordable medical care. This concept was based of the philosophy and ideas of the Mayo brothers and their father, who founded the Mayo Clinic.
“We wanted to be incorporated and to establish ourselves as a foundation, like the Mayo Clinic, but we were not a hospital and didn’t plan to be. It turned out to be an interesting challenge,” said Dr. Warburton in an interview.
Construction began in February 1972, and on Dec. 18, 1972, the doors to the North Canton Medical Foundation finally opened. Over Dr. Warburton’s many decades of service to the community, he has received many awards including the Golden Apple Award, given to him by Aultman’s CEO in 1990. His patients, friends and family adored him. Many patients and colleagues recall that he wasn’t just a physician, he was a caretaker, following his calling to truly care for others. From making house calls after office hours to stopping at a family’s home to check on the sick kids, he was well known for making time for his patients. Dr. Warburton passed away at the age of 101 in February 2010 and was posthumously inducted into the Aultman Hippocrates Honor Society.
Joseph Saadey, M.D., General Surgery
Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Saadey earned his bachelor’s degree in 1987 at the University of Notre Dame, graduating top in his class. He graduated top of his class again in 1991 when he earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University.
He completed his residency in general surgery at Cleveland Clinic in 1996, after which he set up his practice – Surgical Associates of Canton – and joined the medical staff at Aultman Hospital. His patients say they appreciate his speediness. Dr. Saadey is known for his ability to get patients in quickly for procedures and getting their results to them fast. He is not one to make them wait.
According to one of this year’s nominations, “Being around for over 34 years, I’ve seen doctors come and go and interacted with many of them. Dr. Saadey shows such great respect to all his patients and their families. He has a great bedside manner and shows superb kindness to patients, families, administration and nurses. He is a fantastic surgeon with high percentage outcomes without post-operative complications. In all my years, I have never seen him raise his voice or disrespect anyone. His kindness always brightens our day!”
Dr. Saadey has supported the American Cancer Society by being named the "Real Men Wear Pink" Ambassador for this region. He wore pink every day for a month to raise money for breast cancer awareness and research. Dr. Saadey is also the clerkship director for Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), where he helps educate and train future physicians. He writes a personal recommendation for each student and is known for his encouragement to all he teaches.
Louis Shaheen, M.D., Internal Medicine
A Canton native, Dr. Shaheen graduated from GlenOak High School in 1978 and earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Mount Union in 1982. He earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University in 1986.
Dr. Shaheen started practicing medicine at Mansard Medical Associates and has been a member of the Aultman Hospital medical staff since May 1989. He has served on many committees over the years. Additionally, he served as chair of the Department of Internal Medicine from 1997 to 2002 and the president of the medical staff from 2004 through 2005. He was previously honored by being selected as a co-recipient of the Medical Staff Leadership Award in 1997.
Dr. Shaheen in known for consistently going above and beyond for his patients and staff. The last few years, Dr. Shaheen has been in the top five finalists for the Best of the Best family physician in Stark County by the Canton Repository. He has also served as the physician-on-call for the Hall of Fame Enshrinees and their families during the Pro Football Hall of Fame festivities for the past several years.
According to one of this year’s nominations, “Dr. Shaheen is an excellent doctor who really cares about his patients. In my 32 years employed at Aultman, I have heard so many patients, as well as employees, talk very highly of Dr. Shaheen. He sincerely does care and takes time with his patients to get to know them and help them.”
Shruti Trehan, M.D., Hematology/Oncology
Dr. Trehan was born in India, where she completed her early education. She received her bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery (equivalent to a medical degree in the U.S.) from Bombay University in 1992.
She worked as a phlebotomist at University Hospital in Indianapolis as she awaited her internship in the U.S. to begin. She began her journey with Aultman in 1993 as an intern for Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine, now known as NEOMED. She completed that internship and stayed for her residency until completion in 1996. She then went on to complete fellowship in medical oncology at Case Western Reserve University in 1998.
Dr. Trehan started practicing and worked from 1998 – 2002 at Holzer Clinic and Hospice in Gallipolis, Ohio, then went on to be assistant professor at the University of Iowa. She returned to Aultman Hospital in 2004 when she joined the North Canton Medical Foundation as a staff oncologist. Her practice transitioned to Aultman Medical Group in 2013.
In 2018, she received the honor of the Medical Staff President Leadership Award in recognition of her leadership and contributions to the hospital medical staff. She has held several roles as part of the Aultman medical staff including chair of the Process Improvement Committee for Inpatient and Specialty Medicine until 2020 and member of the Ethos Committee, Bylaws Committee and Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee. Dr. Trehan also co-founded the FunDocs initiative, which organizes fun, social activities for the Aultman Hospital medical staff to support physician well-being and to reduce physician burnout, and in 2021, she was elected Medical Staff President-Elect for the Aultman Hospital medical staff.
According to one of this year’s nominations, “I know my life is richer for having known her. She renews my faith in people.”
