Aultman Hospice Seeks Volunteers

CANTON, Ohio (June 10, 2019) – Aultman Hospice has openings in its volunteer program for those interested in providing compassion and support to patients journeying through the final stages of life. No experience is required because training is provided.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Training is free, but registration is required. Training will be held at The Aultman Women’s Board Compassionate Care Center, located on the Aultman Woodlawn campus at 2821 Woodlawn Ave. NW in Canton, Ohio.

Aultman offers several hospice volunteer positions, but the greatest need is for direct support and vigil support. Direct support volunteers provide hands-on, non-nursing support to patients and provide caregivers with a few hours of respite time weekly in the patient’s home or extended-care facility. Volunteers provide emotional support, active listening, conversation, assist with life review and engage in activities the patient is able to enjoy, such as playing cards, reading aloud or playing music. Vigil support volunteers sit at the bedside with patients in the Compassionate Care Center, nursing facility or home when the patient is nearing the last hours of life. Vigil support volunteers must complete direct support training.

To become a volunteer, attendance at all three training sessions is required. Training will take place at the following dates and times:

  • Monday, June 24: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, June 26: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Friday, June 28: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

To learn more about hospice volunteer opportunities or to register for training, please call 330-479-2370. You can also email your detailed contact information to Aultman Hospice Volunteer Coordinator Mia Campbell at mia.campbell@aultman.com.
