2018 Class Inducted into the Aultman Hippocrates Honor Society

CANTON, Ohio (June 13, 2018) – Aultman recently honored three local physicians with induction into the Hippocrates Honor Society. This “lifetime achievement” award, created by the Aultman Hospital Medical Staff, recognizes physicians who exemplify the qualities of excellence, compassion, integrity and leadership.

Congratulations to the 2018 Hippocrates Honor Society inductees:

Michael Rich, M.D., Psychiatry

Over the last 24 years, Dr. Rich has become the pillar of Aultman’s psychiatry service. In addition, he has been an invaluable leader in the hospital and medical staff, as well as in AultCare.

Dr. Rich was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. He grew up in an Italian family in Cuyahoga Falls and attended Walsh Jesuit High School. His father practiced family medicine, and he and his older brother were both inspired to eventually go into medicine as well. After high school, he went off to Purdue University and graduated in 1985 with a degree in biology. This is also where he met his wife, Cindy.   He then completed a psychiatry residency at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1994. And that’s when he joined the medical staff at Aultman.

Since 1998, Dr. Rich has not only been the medical director for the Psychiatry Unit, but also the department chairmen for the Medical Staff. His recent leadership contributions include streamlining psychiatric processes for consults, assisting in the development of the Aultman Behavioral Health Center, gaining a grant development for a behavioral health navigator position in the ED (in collaboration with the community Crisis Center) and developing psychiatric education series for Aultman residency programs.

Dr. Rich has been a board member for the AultCare Insurance Company since 2001 and an AHF Board of Directors member since 2012. He is also the medical director of Behavioral Health for AultCare and Prime Time Health plan and is involved in frequent complex patient reviews related to behavioral health. In 2012, he joined the Aultman Medical Group.

He and his wife Cindy have two sons – Joseph and Dominic.

Gilbert Rowley, M.D., Internal Medicine

Those in the Aultman community have been nominating Dr. Rowley for this honor since 2011 when the Hippocrates Society began.

Dr. Rowley has always called Canton home. He was born and raised in East Canton and went on to college at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1986. In 1989, he completed an internal medicine residency at Akron City Hospital, then joined Aultman’s medical staff in 1990.

At that time, Dr. Rowley joined the internal medicine practice at North Canton Medical Foundation. Fast forward to around 2009 and the NCMF IM group was looking to have a couple of partners rounding on hospital patients full time as a national trend was starting to take over – hospitalist medicine. Dr. Rowley and his partner, Dr. Robert Sliman, signed up. During this time, he also got involved in Aultman’s internal medicine residency program as a faculty member. A few years later, Drs. Rowley and Sliman officially joined Aultman Inpatient Medicine. Dr. Rowley is not only passionate about medicine, but also teaching. He teaches students and residents with varying ranges of experience, and the focus is on adult internal medicine with a wide spectrum of comorbidities and diseases.

But Dr. Rowley has yet another passion that he has called an “unfulfilled obligation” – serving our country in the in the United States Army Reserve. What’s more impressive is that he didn’t join the Army Reserve until well into his career as a physician. So he was not your traditional young man enlisting in the Army. He already had a busy internal medicine practice and a family. But Dr. Rowley will humbly tell you that “he is not a real soldier, just a doctor.” However, his service and dedication obviously extends beyond what most of us can fathom. He has been to Kosovo, Guatemala, Afghanistan and Iraq. He has also spent time at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and most recently at Womack Army Medical Medical Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Dr. Rowley and his wife, Chris, have three children: Matthew (wife, Kelsey), Lauren (husband, Adam) and Elena.

Jean-Claude Tabet, M.D., Neurosurgery

Dr. Tabet is not only well-respected because of his skill in the OR with difficult brain and spine surgeries, but also the surgical staff consider him a dear friend and speak of him with warmth and adoration.

Dr. Tabet grew up in Newton Falls, Ohio. His father was a general surgeon, fostering his interest in surgery, and his mother, a stay-at-home mom, was French, sparking a life-long interest in France and French culture. Dr. Tabet is fluent in French and loves to travel to France, sharing these trips with his loved ones and stories about the culture to anyone who wants to hear more.

Dr. Tabet graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1980. He then completed a residency in neurological surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1986 and immediately joined Aultman’s medical staff. Since then, he has been part of a very limited neurosurgical staff, not leaving much free time. But one thing he makes sure to fit into his yearly schedule is a mission trip to Honduras with CAMO, providing neurosurgical and spine surgery to people who would otherwise have a poor quality of life or may even die from their conditions. Dr. Tabet recruited surgical staff from Aultman to join him, and together, they take donated medical supplies and happily serve the Honduran population, who are in need of much help.

Over the years, Dr. Tabet has represented Aultman’s Trauma Program through numerous site visits from the American College of Surgeons and was instrumental in the Level II Trauma verification process for Aultman. He is never one to refuse a transfer, no matter the situation, and is known for his ability to quickly establish trusting relationships with patients and their families.

Dr. Tabet is now on the cusp of retirement, and he will be greatly missed. Not only by the Aultman staff who were lucky enough to work with him during some of his 32 years at Aultman, but by his grateful patients – many of whom were kept alive for years, sometimes decades longer because of his skilled surgical intervention.

In his retirement, Dr. Tabet and his fiancé, Mary Harris, will undoubtedly be spending lots of time in Texas, where all three of his children – David, Elizabeth and Marian – live with their families (including eight grandchildren),
