Aultman’s Timken Family Cancer Center Enters Construction Phase as Bedford Avenue Closes Permanently
CANTON, Ohio (Feb. 26, 2021) – On March 1, Bedford Avenue will close permanently between Sixth and Seventh streets as the Timken Family Cancer Center on the Aultman campus enters a new phase of development.
Over the last several months, Aultman has been renovating 13,270 square feet of existing space within the hospital, and the construction this spring/summer will add 45,000 square feet of additional space. In preparation for this, Bedford Avenue will be closing, and The Aultman Foundation will have a camera continuously showing the construction efforts on its website for the public to view the current status and time lapse videos showing progress over the last day, week or month. The camera can be viewed at Aultman.org/TFCC-construction.
When completed, the $28 million, 58,270-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will advance clinical care, improve patient experience and strengthen community services, helping make care more convenient for patients like Janice Cooper, an Aultman employee who is fighting breast cancer and continues to receive care at Aultman’s main campus.
“The care I receive continues to save my life,” said Cooper. “There is currently no ‘cure’ for cancer, but I am finding you can ‘live’ with cancer.”
In 2016, Cooper was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer with metastases to numerous bones including her hips, spine, sternum, femurs and more. Not able to be a candidate for surgery due to the metastases, Cooper takes oral medications, with one being a targeted therapy for her particular type of cancer. She sees her oncologist every month and has bloodwork at least twice a month. She also receives a bone strengthener in the Aultman Infusion Center every 90 days.
“My care at Aultman and soon The Timken Family Cancer Center will help me continue to ‘live’ my life for my family.” Cooper said. “God has graced me to be able to continue my journey on this earth. The gift that this community is being given is unbelievable. The generosity of everyone who has donated to help this vision become a reality does not go unnoticed."
To date, 95% of the funding has been committed from many different sources. Aultman Health Foundation invested the first $10 million, the Women’s Board of Aultman raised more than $5 million and support has poured in from other leading local foundations, generous individuals, families and businesses. The Timken Family Cancer Center is named after the $3 million contribution made by the Timken Foundation.
Aultman is currently inviting members of the community to join the local fight against cancer with a contribution that will help close the gap and bring comprehensive cancer care close to home. To make a donation or learn more about Aultman’s Timken Family Cancer Center, call 330-363-4056 or go to aultman.org/TimkenFamilyCancerCenter.
