Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

For some patients, hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is effective technology that supplements other methods of wound treatment. Aultman Hospital and Aultman Alliance Community hospital each have two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, and 6-8 patients can be treated daily.

During HBO treatments, patients lie comfortably in a pressurized chamber to breathe 100 percent oxygen. The increase in oxygen aids the healing and growth of new tissue. Patients can listen to music, watch TV or nap during therapy.

Generally, patients feel no different than if they are lying in their own beds. Patients may sometimes experience a sensation of fullness in the ears - like flying on an airplane or driving down a mountain - as eardrums respond to pressure changes within the chamber. Prior to treatment, patients are taught several easy methods to avoid ear discomfort.

HBO is commonly used to treat:

  • Diabetic wounds of the lower extremities in patients who meet the following three criteria:
    1. Patient has type I or type II diabetes and has a lower extremity wound due to diabetes
    2. Patient has a wound classified as Wagner grade III or higher
    3. Patient has failed an adequate course of standard wound therapy
  • Osteoradionecrosis
  • Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
  • Crush injuries
  • Compromised failed flap/grafts
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Arterial insufficiency

The use of HBO therapy is covered as adjunctive therapy only after there are no measurable signs of healing for at least 30 days of treatment with standard wound therapy and must be used in addition to standard wound care. It is a daily commitment and can last for up to 120 treatment days.
