Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is a rehabilitation profession that helps people speak, process, communicate and swallow effectively following illness or injury.

Who provides speech therapy?

Speech therapy is provided by state-licensed speech therapists. If you are a patient in the hospital or a skilled facility, your physician will determine if you would benefit from speech therapy.

What to Expect from Speech Therapy

During an individualized evaluation, your speech therapist will help you and your family determine your goals. Based on your evaluation and goals, your speech therapist will design customized interventions to improve your ability to communicate, speak clearly, process and retain information, and/or swallow safely. Your speech therapist will provide ongoing evaluation to ensure that the goals are being met or to make changes to the plan for therapy.

How Speech Therapy Can Help

  • Helps improve the ability to communicate or swallow if you have been affected by a stroke or progressive condition like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Addresses changes in memory or problem solving.
  • Addresses changes in speech, voice or swallowing due to stroke, head injury, dementia or motor neuron disease.
  • Addresses communication and swallowing problems following treatment or surgery for oral/neck cancer.

If you think you would benefit from speech therapy in an outpatient facility, discuss your concerns with your physician and ask if you would benefit from speech therapy. Feel free to call one of our locations if you have questions about how speech therapy might help.

If you already have a physician order for speech therapy, please call one of our locations to schedule your initial evaluation with a speech therapist.
