Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Pelvic floor physical therapy is an evidence-based, conservative treatment approach to pelvic floor dysfunction. This type of therapy is aimed at addressing the muscles of the pelvic floor, focusing on improving strength, coordination and/or muscle relaxation.

Pelvic floor physical therapy uses intravaginal – and in some cases intrarectal – treatment approaches to address pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor physical therapists do not use the traditional speculum used by gynecologists. Instead, a digital exam and treatment method is used to allow the treating therapist to feel the muscles and their reaction to treatment. All examinations and treatments take place in a private exam room to protect patient modesty and confidentiality.

Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses these conditions:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urinary urgency
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Constipation
  • Pelvic pain
  • Prolapse
  • Pain and muscle dysfunction related to pregnancy and postpartum
  • Addressing side effects from urogenital and breast cancer

How to prepare for pelvic floor physical therapy

  • Wear clothing that can easily be removed from the waist down.
  • Bring the therapy prescription from your physician.
  • Bring your insurance card, photo ID and completed health history form.
  • If needed, confirm your transportation.
