TMJ Therapy
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 10 million Americans suffer from jaw pain and dysfunction. The jaw or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) is an important joint of the human body that opens and closes roughly 3,000 times per day. There can be a variety of causes of jaw pain including: physical trauma/blow to the face, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, infection, tumor, sleep disorders or auto-immune diseases.
TMJ disorders can cause symptoms like:
- Pain
- Clicking/popping
- Dizziness
- Hearing loss
- Ringing of the ears and ear/neck pain
In many cases, physical therapy is able to help patients get rid of their jaw pain and be able to function with improved quality of life. Physical therapy treatment of jaw pain can include manual therapy to TMJ/cervical spine, jaw exercises, neck strengthening, dry needling and activity modification.
