Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic physical therapy is rehabilitation performed in a warm pool of water. An aquatic-trained physical therapist, physical therapist assistant or athletic trainer will design a customized program to address your problem areas and provide instruction to help you follow that plan.

How Aquatic Therapy Can Help

After injury, early joint movement is possible in the water -- even if you are experiencing pain. Water supports the body and reduces stress to joints so you can strengthen your muscles while your injury heals. Water provides buoyancy to assist with exercise. It can also provide resistance for strengthening.

Aquatic therapy can help you:

  • Increase strength
  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce stress
  • Decrease pulse rate
  • Decrease swelling
  • Increase endurance
  • Increase circulation
  • Increase range of motion/flexibility
  • Increase balance and coordination
  • Protect joints during exercise
  • Correct postural gait deviations

Almost everyone can benefit from pool exercise but there are some conditions that are ideal for aquatic treatment with physical therapy:

  • Acute, sub-acute and chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • Athletic injuries
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint replacements
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Orthopedic dysfunction
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Post-mastectomy
  • Post-surgical: back, hips, knees, ankles, shoulders
  • Pregnant women
  • Scoliosis
  • Severe Deconditioning/weakness

What to Expect from Aquatic Therapy

Prior to treatment, you must have a prescription for physical therapy from a physician. A licensed physical therapist will evaluate you to assess problems with strength, flexibility, posture and movement. The therapist will design a treatment plan, including an exercise program, specifically for you. This plan will address your problem areas and incorporate your goals. Each visit you will be instructed by a physical therapist, physical therapist assistant or athletic trainer.

You will perform exercises in a warm pool of water that ranges from four to six feet in depth. Being able to swim is not necessary and you will not get your ears or head wet in most cases. The aquatic program will integrate land and water exercise to maximize functional progress. Your therapist will give you education on problem areas and suggestions on how to adapt your lifestyle to maximize function and prevent further injury/re-injury.

If you think you might benefit from aquatic therapy, you should consult your physician to discuss a referral.

Aquatic therapy is offered at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital Outpatient Therapy, Aultman North and Aultman Tusc. Please call one these locations to make your appointment.
