Managing Lower Back Pain

If you are suffering with lower back pain, Aultman Therapy Services has a few tips to help reduce your symptoms until your appointment date:

  • Acute low back pain is very common and often resolves in a few days to weeks with simple measures.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist if OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are safe for you to use.
  • Keep moving – bedrest for low back pain is not recommended.  Walk around frequently and change position as you are able. Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting, or extreme range of motion until you see the therapist and receive specific advice about managing your condition.
  • You may use heat packs or cold packs a few times per day if that is helpful.  In general, if your back started hurting in the last 2-3 days, try cold packs for 10-15 minutes at a time.  If your pain started 4 days or more ago, you may find moist heat helpful.  You can use heat for 20 minutes at a time.
