Research Oversight

Only treatments that show great promise and have been tested thoroughly in the lab are studied in clinical trials.

Protecting the safety of the individuals who take part in clinical trials is a high priority. Each trial has scientific oversight and patients also have rights that help protect them.

Institutional Review Board

Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) are independent committees that oversee the conduct and safety of a clinical trial - all studies are appointed an IRB.  The IRB reviews the trial's protocol before the study begins and continually monitors the study to ensure safety and that patients' rights are protected. Aultman has a local IRB committee that is comprised of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and community members.

Data Safety Monitoring Board

Most clinical trials are required to have a Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB). A DSMB's role is to regularly review data collected from a clinical trial to make sure there are no safety problems or differences in results among different groups. The DSMB makes decisions whether or not to continue a trial or stop it. For example, some trials are stopped early if benefits from a strategy or treatment are obvious. That way, participants can be granted access to the new strategy sooner.

Office for Human Research Protections and Food and Drug Administration

In the United States, the Office of human Research Protections (OHRP) and/or the Food ad Drug Administration (FDA) oversee clinical trials. The FDA reviews applications for new medicines and devices before any testing on humans is done.
