Happy Tails Considerations
Before Applying to Volunteer as a Happy Tails Handler – Please Read
Becoming part of the Happy Tails program is a rewarding experience – but it also requires a meaningful commitment from everyone involved, including volunteers, therapy dog evaluators and Aultman Hospital staff. While the investment of time and effort is significant, the comfort, joy and healing that dog therapy visits can bring to our patients and their families make it all worthwhile.
If you're considering applying, please take a moment to thoughtfully review the following expectations.
Commitment
Participation in Happy Tails involves more than just the visits. Time commitments include the initial screening, orientation, preparing your dog (grooming, bathing, etc.), travel and time spent with patients. Volunteers are expected to commit to at least two visits per month for a minimum of one year. You’ll also be required to follow all program guidelines, including behavioral and health screenings for your dog and ongoing primary care. Before applying, reflect on whether you can commit to the program without creating an undue burden on your time and resources.
Socialization
A successful therapy dog must be confident and well-socialized in a variety of settings – not just at home or in familiar places. Your dog should be accustomed to new environments, sounds and people. Consider your dog’s history in visiting unfamiliar places and how they’ve reacted to different situations.
Temperament
Therapy dogs must have a calm, steady temperament and remain composed even in unpredictable circumstances. They should be motivated to interact with all kinds of people, including those who may unintentionally handle them roughly due to physical or cognitive limitations. Happy Tails dogs must be comfortable with individuals of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, including those who use wheelchairs or are visually or hearing impaired.
Control
Your dog must always be under your control. That means no barking, jumping or pulling on the leash. Therapy dogs must exhibit excellent manners and respond reliably to your commands, even in distracting or stressful situations.
Teamwork
Happy Tails is about the bond between you and your dog. You and your dog are a team, working together during every visit. This teamwork goes beyond basic obedience; it’s about trust, clear communication and mutual understanding.
If you feel that you and your dog are ready to meet these expectations, we encourage you to move forward in applying. We look forward to potentially welcoming you to the Happy Tails family and making a positive impact – one wag at a time.
