NEOMED – Core Clerkships
Aultman Health Foundation, in partnership with NEOMED, offers five core clerkships – Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery and Emergency Medicine. Each of these rotations offers undergraduate medical education students the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge essential to their desired practice.

The Aultman clerkship in family medicine enables students to establish competencies in the family physician's approach to the practice of medicine. The approach emphasizes medical care for a broad spectrum of patients in an ambulatory setting. This training in family medicine provides students with the opportunity to strengthen essential skills to treat patients of all ages, including the interview, history, physical examination and diagnosis. In addition, students learn to assess the social and psychological context of illness and the therapeutic role of the family physician in that context. At Aultman, we do everything possible to make this an enjoyable and productive learning experience. We want you to grow and learn in a supportive, nurturing environment.
Clerkship Director: Diana Tec, D.O.
The goal of the internal medicine M3 core clerkship at Aultman Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital is to enable third-year students to find and experience the physician within. With our uniquely designed “Talking Medicine” and one-on-one sessions with our clerkship director, Kevin Frey, M.D., this program is learner-centered while synchronizing with the core clerkship requirements of NEOMED. The internal medicine program provides students with a variety of hospital and ambulatory venues and also exposes candidates to experiences in subspeciality and ICU rotations. Our approach is to help all students understand and practice the six core competencies. We welcome all students to experience the joy and service of the life of a physician during their clerkship.
Clerkship Director: Kevin Frey, M.D.
Medical students enrolled in Aultman’s obstetrics and gynecology clerkship rotate through the labor and delivery, clinic and gynecology operating rooms. Students share in some of the most intimate aspects of patients’ lives, such as pelvic examinations, the birth of a child and the vulnerability of undergoing surgery. When accepted into this program, clerkship candidates will be exposed to extensive and unique experiences in order to gain new insight into the exciting and challenging specialty of obstetrics and gynecology.
Clerkship Director: Julianne Yang Kar, M.D.
The surgery clerkship provides third-year students with a one-on-one preceptor experience. Students encounter patients through office visits and surgery. Students are scheduled a minimum of five weeks of general surgery experience with two weeks each of two chosen electives. Options for electives include anesthesia, orthopedics, urology, cardiovascular, thoracic, vascular or ENT. Students have scheduled didactics with the clerkship director and other faculty attendings. In addition to caring for surgical patients through various stages of their evaluation and treatment, students gain trauma experience during night call in Aultman’s emergency department. Through the surgery clerkship at Aultman Hospital, all students receive outstanding first-hand surgical experience opportunities with our faculty.
Clerkship Director: Joseph Saadey, M.D.
The emergency medicine clerkship offers medical students a comprehensive, three-week clinical rotation at various hospitals. The clerkship is designed to expose all medical students to the fundamentals of emergency medicine, regardless of their future specialty. The curriculum integrates supervised patient care experiences, bedside teaching, lectures, directed readings and simulations to equip students with essential skills and knowledge. Students are expected to engage in a rigorous schedule, covering various shifts including nights and weekends, to handle a broad spectrum of patients and medical conditions in an acute care setting. This immersive experience develops core competencies in emergency medicine through active participation, ensuring students can effectively manage undifferentiated, acutely ill, or injured patients. The clerkship emphasizes continuous feedback and includes a variety of assessments to gauge student progress in achieving learning objectives.
Clerkship Director: Thomas Kinney, M.D.
