Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

  • Applications are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

May I fax additional information for my application?

  • No. Information sent by mail or fax will be discarded. All documentation must be submitted through ERAS. On occasion, a residency program may request additional information that can be faxed or emailed.

Will the residency programs reconsider or critique my application?

  • Due to the large volume of ERAS applications, we cannot reconsider or critique applications.

Do you invite international medical graduates to interview?

  • Yes. All applications are reviewed. Applicants who meet our criteria are eligible for an interview. Applicants are selected without regard to national origin, race, religion or sex.

Do you sponsor visas?

  • Yes, we sponsor J-1 visas and H-1B visas.

Do you have any internships or observerships?

  • No, not at this time.

Do you have maternity/paternity leave?

  • Yes, residents are permitted to take a leave of absence for the birth or adoption of a child.

Are all of your programs accredited?

  • Our programs received full accreditation through the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

How many positions do you offer each year?

• We are a 7-7-7 allopathic program, totaling 21 positions.

How old is your program?

  • Our allopathic program was established in 1974 and is one of the original family medicine residencies in the state of Ohio.

What are your criteria to apply?

  • We require one year of formal medical education in the United States. This must be either clinical rotations through your medical school or through a residency program. The training must have taken place within the last two years (observerships, research and externships do not qualify). We also require a passing USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX Level 1 by your second attempt and a passing USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2 on your first attempt. The year of graduation from medical school must be no more than two years from the date of application.

Do you sponsor visas?

  • Yes, we sponsor J-1 and H1-B visas. For 2023 applicants, we accept Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Pathway 3 Certification.

Do you have away electives?

  • Residents are permitted to complete one away elective (including international) in either their PGY-2 or PGY-3 year. Many residents choose to participate in global health or use this as an opportunity to visit future practice sites.

What is unique about your program?

  • Our outpatient clinic is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), and our program offers individualized longitudinal opportunities to provide extra experience for our residents' areas of interest. These include but are not limited to: hospice and palliative care, sports medicine, obstetrics and women's health, procedures and underserved care. We also integrate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training using state-of-the-art technology.

What kind of procedures do you learn?

  • The program provides residents with those office skills that would allow them to perform the standard procedures in day-to-day practice. Residents will achieve competence in OMT, skin biopsies (shave, punch, elliptical and excisional), cryotherapy, suturing of lacerations, and joint injections. Residents will also perform gynecological procedures, including IUD placement and removal, Nexplanon insertion and removal, colposcopies and endometrial biopsies. The obstetrical procedures include vacuum extraction, laceration and episiotomy repair, IUPC placement and fetal scalp placement.

Are you involved in the community?

  • Yes, our faculty and residents make significant contributions to the health of our community. We provide care at the Hartville Migrant Clinic, Stark County Health Department and the Shipley Child Health Clinic. Our residents have the opportunity to perform pre-participation physicals for high school and middle school athletes.

How are your residents accepted in a multi-residency hospital?

  • Our Family Medicine residents are well-received, and Aultman Hospital provides a family-medicine-friendly training environment. Our residents work side-by-side with OB-GYN, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, Radiology residents, and Cardiovascular Disease fellows. This creates a strong bond and teamwork approach to patient care and lasting professional relationships.

Is your program affiliated with any universities?

  • Yes, our program has a strong affiliation with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) with teaching appointments available for residents. We have medical students throughout the year in our Family Medicine clerkship program. We are also affiliated with Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUHCOM).

What is call like?

  • During your residency training with our program, you will take call on Family Medicine Services (FMS) and Medical Teaching Services (MTS). PGY-1 residents will take short call on weeknights from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. and weekend call from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. PGY-2 will take in-house call overnight and PGY-3 residents can take overnight call from home. The average call per four-week block is three calls.

Is the Aultman OB-GYN residency program affiliated with any universities?

  • The Aultman OB-GYN residency program has a strong affiliation with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). We have M3 students throughout the year in our obstetrics and gynecology clerkship program and M4 electives from August through December.

Does the program offer observerships, shadowing, attendance at grand rounds or didactics?

  • Due to the maximum number of learners, we're unable to offer these experiences.

 

How many positions do you offer each year?

  • We offer two positions each year.

What are your criteria to apply?

  • The Aultman Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program requires one year of formal medical education in the United States. This must be either clinical rotations through your medical school or through a residency program. The training must have taken place within the last two years (observerships and externships do not qualify). We also require a first time pass on the Step 1 USMLE or COMLEX and passing Step 2 USMLE or COMLEX on both parts within your first attempt. The year of graduation from medical school must be no more than three years from the date of application.

What is unique about your program?

  • We have a small group of "core" attendings who believe in a very hands-on approach to teaching. Many of the attendings came through the residency program themselves and feel a sense of pride for the residents in our program.

How are your residents accepted in a multi-residency hospital?

  • Our residents are well-received, and Aultman Hospital provides a resident-friendly training environment. Our residents work side by side with OB-GYN, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Radiology residents. This creates a strong bond and teamwork approach to patient care and lasting professional relationships.

Is a clinical year required?

  • Successful completion of a clinical year in an ACGME-accredited program is required (i.e., Transitional Year Residency, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Preliminary Surgery, etc.).

How are applicants selected for an interview?

  • Due to the number of applicants, screening criteria (board scores, strength of recommendation letters, publications, volunteer/leadership activities) have been developed to allow a numerical assignment that sets a bar above which applications are reviewed by members of the Selection Committee. Applicants selected to interview will be notified by mail or e-mail.

What are the prerequisites to be eligible to take the Core exam?

  • To be eligible to take the Core Exam, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:
    • Have an active application with the ABR.
    • Be in or have successfully completed 36 months of Diagnostic Radiology (DR) residency training, or three years of a DR International Medical Graduate (IMG) training plan.
    • Be current with all ABR fees and pay all annual fees before the date of the exam.

Do you offer an Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway?

  • Yes, as of February 2018, the program has been accredited for a single position per year in the ESIR pathway, allowing residents pursuing Interventional Radiology to complete their training with only one year of fellowship training in IR. Please see our ESIR page for more information.

What is your board pass rate for graduating seniors?

  • For the class of 2021, there was a 100% board pass rate.
