Volunteer Spotlight: Shirley Bullis
At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health over the last 129 years. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers - Shirley Bullis.
Where do you live (city/area)?
I live in the house my parents built in the 1950s in North Benton, Ohio, about 10 miles from Alliance. I have lived in the area all my life.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?
I really can't remember when I started volunteering at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital. I think 2013.
In what departments do you volunteer?
I work at the front desk as a wayfinder and have also worked in our Senior Care Department. I am looking forward to returning to Senior Care when the COVID restrictions are relaxed.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
I decided to try volunteering after I retired in 2012 as a case manager in community mental health. I knew I needed something to do.
What do I like best about volunteering?
The people I meet. I am a people person; my friends will attest that I will start a conversation with anyone. As well as my case management experience, I worked retail for many years so I talked to many people. I also still work at a farm market in the summer, currently at a small store in Sebring and as a sitter at Aultman Alliance.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
As far as hobbies, I enjoy reading. I also like cooking and baking, especially cookies. I am active in my church.
Tell us about your loved ones.
I do not have children, but I do have wonderful nephews and a niece. My nephews are Jared, who lives in Austin, Texas, and Jeremy, who lives in Hudson, New York. My niece, Jen, lives in Columbus and has three children – Paisley, Finley and River – so I am also a great aunt or "Auntie" as Jen calls me. We stay in touch through Zoom and family texts. I also have three cats or fur babies: Juliet, Yellow and Gray. They are very entertaining and sometimes bring me "treats!”
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends do not know.
I went back to college in my early 40s, received my associate degree in 1990, then went back to school again and received my bachelor's degree in 2004. I was 58. Perhaps the most interesting: I can say the ABCs faster backward than forward!
