Volunteer Spotlight: Phyllis Kornhaus

At Aultman, it takes a team to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Phyllis Kornhaus.

Where do you live (city/area)?

I grew up on a farm in Iowa, but after attending college in Indiana, I moved to the Orrville area with my new husband. I’ve called Wayne County my home for almost 58 years.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

I began volunteering in March, 1988. Being a volunteer for more than 30 years has allowed me to log over 25,000 hours of service to Aultman Orrville.

In what department do you volunteer?

As a volunteer at Aultman Orrville, we are responsible for a variety of things. When I come in for my Tuesday morning shift, I work at the Welcome Desk, as well as deliver supplies and interoffice mail to the different departments. I also knit booties for the newborns in the Birth Center – more than 3,000 pairs in the last 20 years! As an auxiliary member, I am heavily involved in the fundraising efforts to support Aultman Orrville Hospital.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

Thirty years ago, the hospital created the Auxiliary to meet the needs of patients and staff. My friend – whose husband was on the board – was excited about the opportunity and asked me to join the Auxiliary with her.

What do you like best about volunteering?

The people. I have met so many individuals through the Auxiliary that have become lifelong friends.

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

My main hobby is music. I love to sing, and I’ve been a member of Cantate Singers for 24 years. We perform at churches in the surrounding communities. I enjoy knitting and crocheting. Besides making booties for the Birth Center, I make hanging kitchen towels and “scrubbies.” I also love to read in my spare time.

Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).

I have been married to my husband, Wayne, for almost 58 years. We have three sons – two live locally and one lives in Pennsylvania. We are also proud grandparents to seven – six boys and one girl.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

Shortly after I married my husband, we moved to the Orrville area and were offered teaching positions right out of college. I taught full time until my first child was born, but then decided to become a substitute teacher. I’m still subbing after 54 years!
