Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Krier
At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health over the last 125 years. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Mary Krier.
Where do you live (city/area)?
After growing up in Navarre, I moved to Massillon, and that has been my home for more than 50 years.
What is your work history?
I retired from Ansell Glove Factory, a surgical glove company, after 35 years of service. In 2004, I began working for the TSA and retired again in 2010.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?
I began volunteering at Aultman shortly after my husband’s death in 2011.
In what department do you volunteer?
When I first started volunteering, I worked in Central Sterile Processing. For the past six years though, I’ve volunteered in Same Day Surgery. You can find me there every Wednesday morning assembling patient packets, doing paperwork or keeping inventory.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
Before my husband passed away, he was very sick and we spent a lot of time at Aultman. After his death, I decided it would be nice to spend time here and give back to the hospital.
What do you like best about volunteering?
I like the feeling I get when I know I am helping others. Plus, the people I work with are terrific!
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
I enjoy staying active. In the winter, I bowl; in the summer, I golf. I absolutely love cooking and throwing dinner parties. In my spare time, you can find me out to dinner with friends, dancing or enjoying my family. But one of my favorite things to do is to go on senior bus trips visiting cities and sightseeing all over the country.
People ask me all the time how I stay so active at my age. I tell them, “I’m not going to sit around. If I want to do something, I’m going to do it. I have my GPS and my CCW. What else do I need?”
Tell us about your loved ones.
My parents and husband are all deceased. But I have a large group of siblings – I’m the second eldest of 13 children – and we are very close. I never had any children of my own, but I’d like to point out that I have been changing diapers since I was seven years old. Between my siblings and my 70 nieces, nephews and now great-nieces and nephews – that’s a lot of diapers!
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.
Through my teens and early adult life, I was extremely shy. No one would believe that now!
