Volunteer Spotlight: John Sullivan
Volunteering is a way of life for John Sullivan, who has dedicated much of his time to helping others since he retired in 2013.
At Aultman Hospital’s Physician Office Building, John is a personable greeter who helps patients find their way to their appointments. In Aultman’s Timken Family Cancer Center, John delivers lab work, restocks the snacks for patients, keeps the coffee going, delivers lunches to infusion patients and helps wherever he can.
John chose Aultman Hospital, despite the distance from his home in Dalton, because he appreciated the care his wife received during a long illness before she passed away. He empathizes with families as they navigate health issues, and his mission is to help them feel comfortable.
John’s first role at Aultman a decade ago was to greet each patient in their room on his assigned floors. Every day during his shift, John talked to each patient and offered to bring ice, refill the water pitcher, get an extra blanket or find other items they needed. Later, he was assigned to the Bedford lobby when COVID precautions were in place. His friendly demeanor helped calm worried patients and visitors during that difficult time.
Today, he continues to go above and beyond in his responsibilities for Aultman. When he first arrives at the Physician Office Building, he removes leaves that have blown into the lobby and makes sure that all of the wheelchairs are neatly lined up and ready for patients. John has memorized the names and office locations of about half of the providers in the building, and he’s working on the rest.
At Aultman’s Timken Family Cancer Center, John gets to know many of the patients who come in regularly for treatment. He has a heart for patients and their families, having been at his wife’s side throughout her illness.
Outside Aultman, John volunteers at MCC Thrift in Kidron, a Mennonite ministry that provides funds for local organizations and overseas missions. After he lost his wife, John met Jenny, an MCC Thrift employee he admired for her dedication to the ministry. When he found out she was single, he invited her for a ride in his yellow BMW convertible. A year later, they were married.
John also volunteers at Cornerstone Community Church, administering communion, passing the offering plate and serving on the visitation team.
John has four adult children and eight grandchildren, all of whom live close enough to visit regularly. He and his wife enjoy riding their bicycles on area trails.
John’s faith is important in motivating him to reach out to comfort others.
“I love the Lord, and even though I lost my wife, I’m fortunate to have the life I do,” John said. “When I volunteer, I enjoy seeing everyone. I feel like I’m doing a service, and I help wherever I can.”
