Volunteer Spotlight: Jimmy Dexter
At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health over the last 125 years. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Jimmy Dexter.
Where do you live (city/area)?
For my entire life, I have called the Canton South area my home.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?
I began volunteering at Aultman about two years ago.
In what department do you volunteer?
I volunteer as a greeter in the MICU family waiting room.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
I have been involved with my dad’s care, and several of my relatives have used Aultman Hospital for their own health care needs. I thought it would be nice to give back to the hospital. I also volunteer because I am unable to work, and it helps me stay busy by helping others.
What do you like best about volunteering?
I enjoy interacting with patients and their families. I take pleasure in helping them out however I am needed.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
I am involved in my church where I am the Sunday school superintendent, usher and assistant song leader. I also make a conscious effort to ride my bike, walk and exercise. In 2007, I had gastric bypass surgery after realizing my weight was out of control – at 569 pounds. Initially, I lost 200 pounds, but I recently joined a national support group called TOPS, which stands for “Taking Off Pounds Sensibly.” Since joining TOPS, I am down to 298 pounds, due in part to the encouragement I receive from my support group friends.
Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children or grandchildren).
I live with my dad, who needed a caretaker after my mother passed away. I also have four brothers and a sister who all live in the Canton area.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.
I have a concern in my heart for helping people. Since I am unable to work, I spend a lot of my free time helping people move or taxiing my friends and family to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store or to run errands.
