Volunteer Spotlight: Jim Herring

At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers - Jim Herring.

Where do you live (city/area)?

I grew up in Mansfield and moved to Orrville later in life.

When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Health Foundation?

I began volunteering at Aultman Orrville Hospital in August 2017. I volunteer on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and try to be available on other days if needed.

In what departments do you volunteer?

As a volunteer at Aultman Orrville, I am responsible for a variety of things. I am stationed at the front desk to welcome visitors, answer questions and assist with registration. As part of my duties, I also interact with several departments throughout the day – from the lab to delivering mail. I also volunteer as a member of the Patient’s Voice Council.

How did you decide to be a volunteer?

Following retirement, I often thought about volunteering. After receiving encouragement from some of my friends, I came to the hospital and filled out an application.

What do you like best about volunteering?

I like different challenges as well as connecting with people. No two days are alike when you volunteer. You are always meeting new people and facing new challenges.

What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?

I like to do yard work and putter around the house.

Tell us about your loved ones.

My wife, Kristen, and I have been married for 41 years. I have a step-daughter and a daughter. Unfortunately, my son passed away a few years ago. In addition, I have five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends do not know.

My life is an open book, but I don’t think many people here at the hospital know that in my earlier years, I was a Boy Scout and had earned an Eagle badge. I also once wrote and delivered a sermon for a church I was attending.
