Volunteer Spotlight: Janet Sprunger
At Aultman, our volunteers are just one of the many groups that have helped us to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of the dedicated volunteers of our Aultman Orrville Auxiliary - Janet Sprunger.
Where do you live (city/area)?
My husband and I live in the small rural town of Kidron, which is on the northern edge of the largest Amish settlement in the U.S. We are co-owners of Kidron Auction, Inc.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman Orrville Hospital?
I began volunteering at the former Dunlap Hospital in March 1988. I am a charter member of the Auxiliary.
In what department do you volunteer?
As a member of the Auxiliary, we interact with all departments throughout Aultman Orrville Hospital.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
My husband, John, was a board member of the hospital, ending his 20 years of service as chairman of the Board. Because of his position, I was aware of a group that wanted to start an auxiliary – and I wanted to be part of it.
What do you like best about volunteering?
I like meeting new people, seeing old friends and helping patients and our staff.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
Over the years, I have worked for Lerch’s Donuts at the Wayne County Fair, sang in the church choir, assisted with Bloodmobile visits, provided childcare for our grandchildren when they were young and actively participated on the food committee for special events at church. I also like to participate in community events where needed.
Tell us about your loved ones.
My wonderful parents are deceased. I have been married to my spouse, John, for 61 years. My son, Jedd, and his wife, Nanette, live in Kidron. He is a charter pilot. Our daughter, Janell, and her husband, Mark, live in New York City. She is a financial analyst. Our daughter, Janeen, lives in Sydney, Ohio. She is a lab technician for Dannon Yogurt. Four grandchildren and a great-grandson complete the family.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.
As part of the Auxiliary, I have served as secretary and Gift Shoppe chairman. I also made silk flower arrangements and sold them in the Gift Shoppe. I worked many years, two afternoons a week. I also helped organize and serve at fund raising dinners for the Auxiliary.
