Volunteer Spotlight: Darlene Johnson
At Aultman, it takes a team to lead our community to improved health. Today, we'd like to introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers – Darlene Johnson.
Where do you live (city/area)?
I have lived in the Canton area my entire life.
When did you begin volunteering at Aultman?
My first day to volunteer was April 9, 2008 – so it’s been 10 years now!
In what department do you volunteer?
Every Tuesday, I push the hospitality cart through the cancer unit offering refreshments to patients and their families. I also assist in delivering flowers to the inpatient floors.
How did you decide to be a volunteer?
I joined Ladies Super Fitness in 2007. At that time, I befriended a lady who inspired me to look into volunteering.
What do you like best about volunteering?
I enjoy the camaraderie with patients. I am there to uplift them, yet they are so uplifting to me! When I leave the hospital, I am fulfilled and satisfied. The Lord has blessed me with a lot in my life, so I am happy to volunteer.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of volunteering?
I enjoy playing games on my iPad, boating, working out, riding the Harley with my husband and spending time with my grandchildren.
Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).
I have been married to my husband, Louie, for 40 years! We have two children and two grandchildren.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.
At 9 years old, I had an incident where I thought I was going to drown. I have always enjoyed being around the water, but I have never learned to swim. I decided this past year to face my fear and take swimming lessons!
