Chaplain Spotlight: Terry Livengood

Where do you live (city/area)?

I was born at Aultman and I graduated from Perry High School in 1981. I currently live in the Massillon/Tuslaw area.

College/degree/licensure?

I received a master’s degree in Theology from Walsh University. I also completed a two-and-a-half-year internship and chaplain training in Cleveland. I am a certified thanatologist, which means I specialize in death and dying.

When did you become a chaplain at Aultman Health Foundation?

I have been a chaplain at Aultman for 13 years.

At what facility? What is your role?

I spend my time between Woodlawn and Aultman Hospital. I am a lead chaplain in Spiritual Care, which means I focus on four areas – patients, families, staff and clergy. My other responsibilities include administrative duties, speaking engagements, community event planning, teaching Medical Ethics and World Religion at Aultman College and membership of several committees.

How did you decide to become a chaplain?

I pastored in three different churches for 17 years. One of my favorite parts of my ministry was visiting parishioners in the hospital setting. I enjoyed the personal, intimate environment, and I realized that this was one of my strengths.

What do you like best about your career?

I love journeying with families. I enjoy facilitating for families who may not even know what they need. I’m not there to fix anything – it’s just about being present.

What are some of your hobbies/interests?

I enjoy playing the piano, refurbishing my home, decorating, gardening, wood working and spending time with my grandkids.

Tell us about your loved ones (parents, spouse, children, grandchildren).

I am married to my wife, Jane Marie, and we have three adult children – Abby (Benny), Emily (Jonny) and Zachary. I have two grandchildren – Eliza Jane and Duke Dominic.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that many of your friends may not know.

For several years, I was an art teacher - even though I am color blind!
