Chaplain Spotlight: Ray Pfahler

Where do you live?

I live in Orrville and have been there for more than 28 years. I grew up on a farm near New Washington in Crawford County.

What would you like to tell us about your education?

I am a graduate of Taylor University and Ashland Theological Seminary with degrees in psychology, a master’s in pastoral counseling and a Master of Divinity. I also completed two units of clinical pastoral education.

When did you become a chaplain at Aultman Health System?

I was hired by Aultman in September 2013.

At what facility do you work? What is your role?

Since joining Aultman, I’ve worked at various times with Aultman Hospital, Aultman Hospice and Palliative Care and Aultman Orrville Hospital. I have been the chaplain at Aultman Orrville Hospital since July 2014.

How did you decide to become a chaplain?

There were a number of factors, not the least of which was the direction of God. I first was a pastor for 27 years and had been a volunteer with hospice for a short time. Considering how I wanted to spend the next season of my life, being inspired by the stories of other chaplains and working closely in the hospice environment, I pursued clinical pastoral education and was invited to prepare for chaplaincy. I was hired, and the joys of service in this field began and are continuing.

What do you like best about your career?

I love being there for a patient or a family member who needs someone to listen, to bring patience, calm and spiritual care. I have the opportunity to pray multiple times for people during the day with the response of increased peace and hope. As a result, I also receive the blessings of being connected with people.

What are some of your hobbies/interests?

I relax at the piano and enjoy reading history and biographies. I am a fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes, Cleveland Guardians and Cleveland Cavaliers. My extra time is given as a volunteer at my church. I have done extensive research into my family genealogy and hope to compile a book one day of my ancestor immigrant stories. Being a news and politics junkie would also be true of me.

Tell us about your loved ones.

I am married to Wanda, a newly retired nurse, who has started her own Legacy and Heirloom Sewing business. We have two adult sons and two daughters-in-law, along with four grandchildren.
