A Healthier You with Aultman Weight Management
This is the first in a two-part series about Aultman Health Foundation team members who improved their health with help from Aultman Weight Management.
Wendy Conley, who works for PrimeTime Health Plan, struggled with her weight since her mid-20s. “I had some success with the Atkins Diet, but a low-fat diet I tried was a complete failure,” she recalled. “I also tried just exercise and initially had some success. But over and over, the weight would creep back on.”
Wendy knew her efforts to lose weight on her own weren’t working, and she grew increasingly concerned about failing the employee wellness program metrics each year. “Maybe it was because I hit the ‘big 40’ – who knows – but the mirror did not reflect the person I saw myself as being,” she said. “My position requires public presentations, and I wasn’t proud of my appearance.”
Upon realizing she needed someone to teach her how to eat healthier, Wendy checked into Aultman Weight Management programs. “I don’t like to spend money, so it was a big decision,” she shared. “When I factored in the employee discount and reimbursement, I realized I couldn’t afford not to do it!”
Wendy chose the New Directions program, an all-liquid diet. She enjoyed the educational classes and weekly one-on-one sessions. “The Aultman Weight Management team taught me how to eat and how to decipher nutrition labels,” she said. “They are wonderful, always encouraging and offering suggestions. They suggest ways to overcome challenges and help you see the bigger picture beyond a number on the scale or a dress size.”
Wendy started the New Directions program June 4, 2014 – and hit her goal weight the week of Thanksgiving that same year. “The biggest challenge is maintaining my weight. It’s about choices I make every day,” she explained. “I have been in the STARS maintenance program ever since because it keeps me accountable.”
Now that she knows how to make better food choices, Wendy eats a more balanced variety of food with vegetables and fruits. “My husband and kids are proud of me – and I think I’ve inspired a few friends to eat better too,” she said. “Being a wife and mother, I would always put my needs last. Not anymore. I have to be healthy to care for them, and I’m setting a good example for my kids.”
Throughout this journey to improved health, Wendy has become an avid runner. “I have more energy and more confidence now,” she offered. “Cholesterol, blood pressure – all of those disease precursors are within normal limits. What I enjoy most about my weight loss is that I am healthy.”
For anyone considering Aultman Weight Management, Wendy recommends attending a free orientation session to learn about the different programs, costs and Aultman discounts. “This is an investment in yourself, and you are worth it,” she said. “Everyone in your life will benefit from a healthier you.”
