Grateful Patient Story: Patty Giacomini
Many of the greatest stories ever told involve courage in the face of adversity. Patty Giacomini is living a beautiful story filled with purpose and family, shaped by the challenges she’s faced. A northeast Ohio native, Patty completed medical school at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and moved to Los Angeles County, California, where she practiced medicine and raised her family.
Years into her career, Patty experienced significant health issues, which led to a diagnosis of venous thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) – a condition that occurs when certain blood vessels or nerves are compressed. Patty’s specific condition is more rare, accounting for only 5% of cases.
When her symptoms intensified, more complex surgeries were necessary. To focus on her recovery and healing, Patty took time away from her clinical work.
Two years ago, Patty and her husband moved back to northeast Ohio to be closer to family. With the move came the task of getting established with a new primary care physician. Patty’s family connected her to Dr. Howard Metzger at Aultman Medical Group - Family Medicine of Stark County.
After years of appointments and treatment for TOS, Patty felt nervous seeing a new clinician for the first time and having to relive her experiences when she shared her health history. Patty recalled that her fears were eased during her very first visit.
“Dr. Metzger was very personable and gave me all the time I needed,” Patty shared. “He listened to my health history, asked great questions and cut through to what was most important to get me referred to specialists.”
Along with specialist visits, Dr. Metzger connected Patty to Aultman Physical Therapy in Massillon. Patty was pleased with the care she received and noted that the team was highly knowledgeable and helped her improve the range of motion in her upper body. Patty has gone on to have more routine screenings and bloodwork performed by care teams throughout Aultman Health Foundation. With every visit, Patty shared how encouraged she was by the kindness and quality of the care she received and the efficient way it was delivered.
Patty felt compelled to share her story in recognition of Doctors’ Day. As a physician, Patty experienced firsthand the power of heartfelt expressions of gratitude received from her patients. Writing a note of gratitude to Dr. Metzger and making a gift in his name was a way she could say thank you for the care she received. “Physicians work really hard, but they don’t always hear the positive words,” Patty explained. “I wanted to give kudos to Dr. Metzger for my care.”
When asked what message she would share with others, Patty highlighted the importance of being established with a primary care physician. “Always start with your primary care physician,” Patty said. “They are the person who sees you regularly, who really knows you and can direct your care.”
These days, Patty’s health and pain are well managed, and she enjoys time with her husband and their two pups. While the recent chapters of Patty’s story have included trials, the overall tale portrays a journey of hope and a spirit of resiliency.
