Grateful Patient Story - Nancy Wharmby
Nancy Wharmby believes that a personal connection with a provider can make all the difference in a patient’s health journey. As president of Medicine Center Pharmacy, she has a passion for serving the community through excellent care and customer service.
But this belief became even more real to Nancy when a serious accident led to a long recovery. In August 2020, Nancy suffered an injury on her property when a large stone fell on her lower leg, causing significant damage.
Three months after the accident and after receiving care for the injury, Nancy’s complications brought her to Aultman’s Wound Care Center. Nancy had her first visit in November 2020, and it wasn’t until June 2021 that her wound fully healed.
The comprehensive care Nancy received from the Wound Care Team amazed her, she said. Dr. Dustin Fox, podiatrist, and the nursing staff not only treated her wound, but also provided education and support, including advocating for Nancy to find the products she needed at an affordable price.
Nancy shared that the team went above and beyond, offering emotional support through the highs and lows of her recovery. During her weekly visits, the nurses asked Nancy for stories and pictures of her two young grandchildren.
“The staff was incredible,” Nancy said. “They showed care and concern, propping me up on the low days and helping me move forward.”
During her appointments with Dr. Fox, Nancy used future activities with her grandchildren as motivation to get stronger. “I would look at Dr. Fox and say, ‘It’s the middle of winter; do you think my wound will be closed by summer so I can go swimming with my grandkids?’” For Nancy, setting a goal to reengage with her favorite family activities helped her heal.
Today, Nancy is doing exceptionally well. She still experiences occasional flare ups, but she is grateful to be strong enough to chase her grandchildren and play with them in the creek.
When asked why she told her story, Nancy said, “It’s important to share hope. A lot of people probably don’t know the Wound Care Center is here, and they suffer on their own for too long. I want everyone along the path to know there is hope and support so they can get there too. My care team wanted me to get back to my life. It reminds me that my work in the community is so similar.”
