Grateful Patient Story: Larry Grove
As a registered nurse, Larry Grove was initially skeptical of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). But when faced with the possibility of losing all or part of his foot due to a serious infection, he realized this treatment might be his best chance at healing.
A native of Alliance and the father of two adult children, Larry began his nursing career at Aultman Hospital and later became a traveling nurse. His decision to pursue nursing was deeply personal: After surviving a life-altering illness, he was inspired by the care he received from nurses and felt called to give back to the profession that saved his life not once, but twice.
His most recent medical journey began in early 2025 when he was working at the University of Iowa Medical Center. As an uncontrolled diabetic, Larry knew that foot wounds could pose serious risks.
When a callus on the outside of his right foot split open and became infected, he initially tried to manage it himself. But as the infection progressed, his foot and lower leg became severely swollen, ultimately affecting his ability to work.
He underwent surgery to remove the infected callus, and an MRI revealed bone marrow edema indicative of osteomyelitis (a bone infection). A second surgery followed to remove part of the fifth metatarsal. His prescribed course of treatment included six weeks of IV antibiotics.
With his ability to work compromised and his support system far away, Larry made the decision to return home to Alliance. Once there, his medical team advised him to go directly to the Emergency Department at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital (AACH) to quickly connect with the specialists needed for his ongoing care.
Larry was referred to the AACH Wound Care Center, where Dr. Gamal El-Mobasher, medical director for wound care services, evaluated him and recommended 20 sessions, or "dives," in the hyperbaric chamber, alongside continued antibiotic therapy. Although he was doubtful that HBOT would be effective, Larry agreed to begin the treatment.
To his surprise, just five dives in, he began to notice improvement: His wound bed was turning pink, a sign of healing. Now, with only five dives remaining, his wound is nearly healed, and Larry couldn’t be more grateful.
He credits Ed Carr, RRT, the lead hyperbaric technician, for making the experience comfortable and easing his anxiety about the chamber. He also thanks Tom Skelding, RN, whose patience and encouragement of “just give it a try” helped change his outlook.
As a nurse, Larry understands the complexities behind patient care and is highly complimentary of the entire AACH Wound Care Center team. He observed firsthand the seamless communication, collaboration and professionalism that ensures patients receive the highest level of care.
When asked what advice he would give to other patients who may be skeptical of hyperbaric therapy, Larry said, “Listen, reflect and follow the professionals’ directions; they are the experts. I trust this team explicitly. From Dr. El-Mobasher to the front desk receptionist, everyone is pleasant and dedicated to making the experience the best it can be.”
