Grateful Patient Story: Kristina Beans

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Kristina Beans discovered an egg-sized lump in her left breast. A married mother of two sons, Kristina did not seek medical care right away. She had no family history of breast cancer, and a friend with a similar issue had recently been diagnosed with a cyst.

Kristina was occupied that summer with planning an alternative COVID-19-safe homecoming for her son, Devon, who was entering his senior year at Waterloo High School. She and other parents planned the event to help students regain a sense of normality after their prom had been canceled in the spring. Because her summer was so busy, Kristina further delayed seeking medical care.

In time, Kristina confided in her best friend, Katie Gearhart, about the lump she had discovered. Katie urged her to seek immediate medical attention, and she called Kristina frequently to ensure that she scheduled an appointment.

In November 2020, Kristina saw her primary care provider, Lauren Rogel, at Aultman Alliance Family Medicine of AOH. An ultrasound and mammogram led to an urgent biopsy, revealing HER2 breast cancer. Dr. Paul F. Hudzik with Aultman Medical Group General Surgery performed a mastectomy and additional lymph node biopsies.

Radiation and chemotherapy followed and brought significant challenges to her physical health. Kristina’s experienced and compassionate team at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital (AACH) supported her through it all.

Her cancer patient navigator, Brandy Hahn, explained what to expect during treatment, helped her schedule appointments and provided emotional support.

“I’ve been blessed with outstanding caregivers,” Kristina said. “From my physician team to Brandy and the entire team at AACH, everyone anticipated my needs and truly cared about me.”

Today, Kristina continues with radiation and oral chemotherapy as her bone metastasis persists. Reflecting on her cancer journey, Kristina encourages others to prioritize their health. “Do not wait to be seen,” Kristina said. “Trust your initial instincts and seek care sooner rather than later.”

Looking back, Kristina credits her best friend for helping save her life. The unknown can be scary, but Kristina has learned the importance of being vulnerable with trusted allies, especially about health concerns.

“Surround yourself with people who truly care about you and want to support you,” Kristina said. “Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable with those you love most.”
